EHP Day 46-Time With the Thoughts of God
1 Corinthians 2:11-13
For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
We may not fully appreciate the reality of our limitations. Regardless, researchers know we humans can perceive only 30% of the range of the sun’s light and 1/70 of the spectrum of electromagnetic energy. Other animals exceed those abilities. Bats detect insects by sonar; pigeons navigate by magnetic fields; bloodhounds perceive a world of smell unavailable to us.
How great the gap, then, between our thoughts and the thoughts of a God whose knowledge and wisdom knows no limit. His “omniscience” means God knows all things actual and possible. “My thoughts,” God reveals, “are not your thoughts; My ways are not your ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Is. 55:8-9).
Given our limitations rooted in our creaturely humanness, what chance do we have at accurately understanding anything about God? The truth? We have a tremendous chance because of the Holy Spirit, who
is God (one of the 3 Persons of the Triune God)
knows exhaustively the thoughts of God
reveals accurately to us in ways we can understand
provides truth about the things freely given to us by God
uses spiritually gifted people to teach others spiritual truths
