1 Thessalonians: Protecting Faith, Pursuing Holiness, Looking Up

Young Christians can be vulnerable. The joy of understanding God’s love in Christ, the relief of sins forgiven and a new membership in God’s family, the delight of the milk of the Word—these early gifts of grace create an eagerness to grow in the things of the Lord. But the truth is—Satan counter attacks fully intending destroy young spiritual life and new gains.

The young believers in the Roman capital of Macedonia were experiencing both spiritual growth and spiritual attacks. So what kind of coaching do such new believers (and perhaps older ones as well) need to thrive?

Get STARTED — Discuss the things you believe make it difficult to grow in your walk with Jesus.

  • What does the enemy throw at us?
  • Ephesians 6:16 speaks of “the flaming darts of the evil one.” Name a flaming dark that came flying into your life unexpectedly? Why was it tough to handle.

Explore the WORD — Exploring 1 Thessalonians

What did the Evil One throw at the Thessalonians?

1 Thess. 1:6 1 Thess 2:13-16 2:17-18 1 Thess 4:13

Why would these “arrows” be tough on young Christians?

How did “coach” Paul encourage these young believers? What do you “hear” in his words?

1 Thess 1:2-10 1 Thess 2:13, 19 1 Thess 3:6-13 1 Thess 5:23-24

Paul mentions the coming of the Lord Jesus in every chapter of 1 Thessalonians. Take a moment and list from each chapter the verses which mention of the Lord’s return

1 Thessalonians 1 _________________       1 Thessalonians 3 __________________

1 Thessalonians 2 _________________       1 Thessalonians 4 __________________

1 Thessalonians 5 _____________________

Why do you think Paul did this?

Finally, what practical Christian advice do you find in 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22?

Which specific “exhortation” do you find most helpful.

Prioritizing APPLICATION – finish by talking with your group about the personal encouragement you take away from the study of this letter.

  • Do you draw fresh strength for a challenge you’re facing?
  • Any specific new truth you’ve discovered?
  • Are you more aware of the possibility of the Lord’s return?

If you have time, discuss your thoughts about the recent Pastoral Letter you received, “The Gospel, Jesus’ Church, and addressing discriminatory mistreatment.” Pastor David would welcome your thoughts and response.
